Vaginoplasty; Postoperative Period and Revision Surgery

Vaginopasty surgeries, like labiaplasty and other genital aesthetic surgeries, should be performed by experienced physicians. After vaginoplasty, patients can be discharged on the same day. It is important to follow all the recommendations given by the physician in the postoperative period. In this section, the post-vaginoplasty period and what you need to do are explained in detail.

What should be considered in the post-vaginal tightening period?

  • Spend the first three days at home resting as much as possible
  • Use the painkillers and antibiotics prescribed to you regularly
  • Intermittent ice compression wrapped in a cloth for three days after the surgery will reduce your pain, edema, and bleeding complaints
  • Follow the hygiene rules, especially when you are on the toilet
  • Make your dressings with creams containing antiseptic, especially for seven days, so your risk of infection will decrease
  • During the recovery period, it is important to start Kegel exercises to strengthen the pelvic muscles
  • To minimize your pain complaint, you must not experience constipation for at least five days.

If you have constipation problems, you should take precautions with diet and softening (laxative) drugs.

What shouldn’t be done after the vaginoplasty operation?

After vaginoplasty procedure;

  • Stay away from heavy sports training, fitness, epilation, yoga and pilates, cycling, and horse riding for a month
  • Abstain from sexual intercourse for at least 1.5 months; in some cases, sexual avoidance can be extended up to 2 months.
  • Know that mild pain and bleeding are expected in the first sexual intercourse after your vaginoplasty operation. You can use lubricating gels in the first few intercourses because of arousal due to fear and contractions and the lack of wetting.

Fear of intercourse after vaginal tightening

After vaginal tightening, some patients may experience anxiety about having sexual intercourse with their partners. Such anxieties can be reduced with finger exercises recommended a few days before sexual intercourse. Some patients may encounter pain in their first intercourse. Considering that the pain develops due to involuntary contractions in the examinations of these patients, the problem can be easily overcome with pelvic rehabilitation exercises and verbal suggestions. However, if it is found that the perineum is too high and blockspenile penetration, the vaginal entrance should be enlarged surgically or with a laser incision.

How often should post-operative check-ups be?

Routine check-ups after vaginoplasty are on the second day, the first week, and before intercourse (1,5th month). However, these controls may not be suitable for our patients coming from out of town or abroad. Therefore, routine controls may not be applied. In these patients, communication is continued by telephone.

Sex therapies for patients with vaginal tightening

A significant number of patients who apply for vaginoplasty may also experience some sexual or marital problems. These patients may also be offered sexual and/or marriage therapies.

Vaginoplasty revision (correction) surgeries

Vaginoplasty revision can be performed on patients unsatisfied with the results after the operation, stating that they cannot get the desired results or encounter different problems. Re-performing the vaginoplasty surgery is called “vaginoplasty revision”.

The most common problems that need vaginoplasty revision surgery:

  • Failure to achieve adequate vaginal narrowing. Tightening only the entrance of the vaginal canal, not the entire length
  • Pain during sexual intercourse or inability to have intercourse in any way due to excessive narrowing of the vaginal entrance ('Iatrogenic vaginismus')
  • Sexual pain (dyspareunia) in every intercourse due to the scar formation in the posterior entrance area of the vagina
  • Inclusion cysts in the vaginal wall or perineum. These cysts can become abscessed over time

In all these cases, vaginoplasty revision surgeries can be performed.

Excellent results are obtained in patients whose surgery is performed with the proper technique and who correctly follow the recommendations for post-vaginal tightening surgery. Dos and don'ts, normal and abnormal conditions after all vaginal tightening surgeries performed in our clinic are given to our patients in written form in detail.
