Vaginismus most commonly arises from false, exaggerated and missing information about sexuality. Second-hand, urban legends are the prominent reasons for vaginismus. In this section, detailed information is given about vaginismus treatment and applied treatment methods.
Vaginismus is a sexual problem which shows itself with the failure of sexual penetration as a result of sexual dysfunction and involuntary contraction during sexual intercourse. It is also known as ‘first night fear’ or ‘unconsummated marriage’.
It is quite common in Turkey. Thanks to modern methods used in the treatment of vaginismus, definite and permanent solution has become possible in a short time as only in 3-4 days.
Cognitive-Behavioral Sexual Therapy (CBST) methods by systematic insensitivity technique are the most commonly used and accepted ways in vaginismus treatments. Surgical methods can also be applied for congenital or subsequent physical problems in genital area.
Vaginismus most commonly arises from false, exaggerated and missing information about sexuality. Secondly, fabricated urban legends, myths and exaggerated information are the leading causes of vaginismus.
Such thoughts as hymen will be hurt, bled and torn during the intercourse at the first night are imposed into the brains of young girls. Thus, intercourse cannot happen at the first night because of involuntary contractions.
According to our studies in HERA Vaginismus Treatment Association, many patients with vaginismus problem think that their vaginas are very narrow, hymens are closed and they will have too much pain at the first night. Even, some of them think that they will be hospitalized due to excessive bleeding, they cannot sit on for 3 days and they will die because of blood loss.
In the cognitive treatments given for vaginismus, accurate information is given about hymen, sexuality, first night and female and male anatomy. Unreal and exaggerated information is cleared of minds first and accurate and scientific information is given.
The behavioral therapy method in vaginismus is based on a number of exercises. These exercises, which aim to manage the pelvic floor muscles, are called ’pelvic exercises’ or ‘vaginismus exercises’.
Vaginismus exercises are the most important part of the treatments. Mirror exercises, breathing exercises, massage, kegel exercises, touch, finger exercises and some dilator exercises are among these managements.
The person is expected to learn her own body, to make peace with the genital area and to learn how to control her body.
Finger exercises recommended by doctors and psychologists are difficult, tedious, repulsive and boring for many patients with vaginismus. Some of the patients have to give up their treatments because of these exercises. Finger exercises for vaginismus treatment may provide some benefit for one’s knowing herself. However, there are no finger exercises among the vaginismus exercises applied by our clinics.
Surgical methods should be preferred if there is a congenital or acquired structural problem related to hymen or vagina as a result of gynecological evaluation which is performed before vaginismus treatment. For example, in cases where the hymen is thick, crescent, rigid, or septated surgical procedures such as hymenectomy (removal of hymen tissue operation) or hymenotomy (incision in the hymen) operations may be required.
Other supportive methods for the treatment of vaginismus include Hypnosis therapy (hypnotherapy),Acupuncture, EMDR, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) and Botinium injections. All these methods are complementary and supportive to the main treatment methods.
There is NO magic drug, elixir, pills or syrup for rapidly treating vaginismus .The most important factors in the success of the treatment is to strictly follow all instructions given by the clinic with confidence, patience and determination. It is not enough to apply only scientific treatments for the treatment of vaginismus. Perseverance, determination, patience, compassion and intense interest of the therapist are required for success.
One of the most important factors for vaginismus treatment is to decide and get into action as soon as possible. Because vaginismus does not heal spontaneously by waiting without treatment, it even gets worse. The goals of vaginismus treatment are to reach a permanent solution with ‘patient friendly’ treatment methods which can be applied easily without pain or irritation.
Vaginismus treatment methods are chosen according to the condition, degree, the reason of the disease, different accompanying problems and a person’s own characteristics. Nowadays, it has become possible to reach a permanent solution with consecutive 3-4 days of vaginismus treatment which is applied by experienced doctors and therapists at our clinics.
