How is Labiaplasty Performed?

Labiaplasty surgeries are genital cosmetic procedures performed to reduce the labia minora to give them aesthetically better appearance.

Labiaplasty is the most popular surgical procedure among all procedures in the field of genital cosmetic surgery. Vaginal tightening is the second most common procedure after labiaplasty in genital aesthetics.

Labiaplasty has also functional benefits, such as increasing the patient’s self-confidence; enabling her to feel more comfortable with her partner, wear tights and bikinis freely in social environments, and urinate more comfortably; making the genital area much more hygienic; eliminating pain due to stretching during sexual intercourse; and reducing the risk of frequent vaginal infections.

How is labiaplasty performed?

Before labiaplasty, the patient is interviewed to clarify her expectations from the surgery, and the labiaplasty technique is determined. The operation is then planned accordingly. The operation is usually performed in conjunction with clitoral hood reduction.

It takes 1 minutes to 1.5 hours on average. It can be performed with a variety of anesthetic methods selected depending on the patient’s request and medical condition, such as local anesthesia (numbing),general anesthesia (sleep-like state),sedation anesthesia (light sleep-like state),or spinal anesthesia (numbing from the low back).

Labiaplasty can be performed in a hospital or clinical setting, in line with the preference of the patient and the physician. Since the superficial and subcutaneous sutures are placed aesthetically, operations leave usually no scar. Because of the anatomical features of this region, wound healing is extremely fast.

Clitoral Hood Reduction in Conjunction With Labiaplasty

When researched on the Internet, it is seen that many physicians work in the field of labiaplasty, but most of them have not adequate experience when it comes to performing clitoral hood reduction in conjunction with labiaplasty. However, performing labiaplasty without clitoral hood reduction is likely to cause damage rather than benefit.

With the reduced labia minora, the clitoral hood becomes more noticeable and looks like a ‘micro-penis’ when viewed from the outside.

Therefore, clitoral hood reduction should be performed in conjunction with labiaplasty in most of the patients. However, the operation should be performed very carefully because of the different anatomy of the clitoris and the density of blood vessels and nerves in this area. When performed with the right technique, clitoral cosmetic surgery never decreases sexual pleasure, and even increases it in most cases.

Is labiaplasty risky?

There is no risk when the procedure is performed by experienced hands using the right technique. The risks such as bleeding, infection, edema, and wound dehiscence, which are the general risks involved in every operation, are at minimum levels.

Is labiaplasty a painful procedure?

Since the area is completely anesthetized during labiaplasty, no pain is felt. It will be adequate to use simple pain killers for mild postoperative pain that may be felt for a few days after the operation. As the edema will disappears rapidly, there will be no pain problem to be afraid of.
