What is Vaginal Wind (Flatulence, Queef)? Causes and Treatment

During sexual intercourse, the air coming from the vagina, gas leakage, and sound are widespread and disturbing conditions. It’s mostly caused by emission of trapped air from vagina. The sound of air coming out of the vagina, also known as "flatus vaginalis", “vaginal gas” or “vaginal fart” is generally associated with the width of the vagina and excessive wetting. Gas leakage and sound from the vagina during sexual intercourse or exercise is also known as “queef” or “vaginal wind”. Since the gas released during vaginal wind is not from the intestine, it is odorless.

What kind of problems does it cause?

Vaginal gas during intercourse due to the width of the vagina affects women negatively, especially from a psychological point of view. Many women state that their concentration is impaired during sexual intercourse due to the vaginal wind; they are ashamed of their partners, so they cannot focus on pleasure. There are even those who refuse to have sex with their partners just for this vaginal flatulence reason.

When does the vaginal wind happen?

The problem of unintentional leakage of odorless gas from the vagina and disturbing sound may also occur during all the activities which increase intra-abdominal pressure listed below, except for sexual intercourse are;

  • Yoga,
  • Plates,
  • Fitness,
  • Running,
  • Weight lifting.

It has been reported in the literature that it is seen even in a thin 17-year-old girl who has a narrow vagina and has never given birth.

What causes vaginal wind problem during sexual intercourse?

Most women associate these sounds during intercourse, which they have experienced and reduce their quality of life, only with the vagina enlargement and apply to the physician for vaginal tightening operation. Yes, the vaginal canal indeed expands like a balloon due to arousal during sexual intercourse. However, 'Wet Vagina Syndrome' also plays an important role in vaginal gas leakage. In other words, the excessive wetness of that area due to stimulation is also the cause of vaginal gas.

In a scientific study, it was stated that the incidence of vaginal wind is 20%, that it is due to the enlargement of the vaginal entrance as a result of vaginal laxity (relaxation) due to weakness of the pelvic floor muscles, and that vaginal laser application is promising for its treatment.

Treatments of vaginal wind (queef) problem

In our clinic, first of all, a gynecologic examination is performed for patients who have vaginal wind problem. Surgical methods are the first line in patients with excessive vaginal enlargement and low vaginal muscle tone in their gynecologic examination. Surgical vaginal tightening (“Vaginoplasty Opretation”),that is, surgically narrowing the vagina, often provides a permanent solution in the treatment of queefproblem.

Some of the patients who apply with the problem of air coming from the vagina and sound during sexual intercourse do not have advanced vaginal width problems. In these patients with mild vaginal enlargement, energy-based treatments such as ablative laser vagina tightening or genital radiofrequency can be applied in our clinic. Vaginal laser and genital radiofrequency treatments can be repeated as several sessions.
