It is considered within vagina aesthetics and cosmetic gynecology. Surgeries performed to restore enlarged and sagged vagina are called as ‘vagina tightening’ or 'surgical vaginal rejuvenation procedure'. What is vaginoplasty? Vaginoplasty definition

Surgical vaginal tightening operations are defined as ‘vaginoplasty’.  In fact, vaginal tightening operations are only a part of vaginoplasty operations.

All of the operations performed to ‘create a new vagina’ or aesthetically and functionally correct the existing vagina due to such reasons as congenital vagina inexistence or vagina shortness (mullerian agenesis) and sex change from female to male are called as a vaginoplasty.

What is a vaginal tightening operation?

The vagina tightening operations are considered within genital aesthetics and cosmetic gynecology. Operations performed to restore enlarged and sagged vagina are called as ‘vagina tightening operations’.

Vaginal tightening operations are also called as ‘vagina narrowing surgery’, ‘vaginal reconstruction’ or ‘vagina narrowing operation’. Perineoplasty and perineal aesthetics are usually performed during vaginal tightening procedures.

Why does vagina enlarge?

Vagina is most commonly enlarged after normal births. In addition, difficult and traumatic births increase enlargement. On the other hand, congenital and acquired connective tissue weakness caused by smoking, malnutrition and alcohol consumption lead to enlargement and sagging of vagina, especially in later ages.

Only the pregnancy process itself is enlarging vagina. In other words, even if the pregnancy process is terminated by cesarean section, vaginal enlargement occurs. Other causes of vaginal enlargement include frequent sexual intercourse, gynecological interventions such as abortion and examinations.

Why is vagina tightening performed?

Vagina tightening operation can be done for many reasons. The most common reasons:

Pleasure in sexual intercourse: As the vagina tissue loosens and becomes wide, problems may occur such as being not able to get pleasure from sexual intercourse. Vaginoplasty-Perineoplasty operation re-tightens loosened and enlarged vagina; as the vagina gets tighter, both women and men get more pleasure from sexual intercourse.

Sounds coming from the vagina during sexual intercourse: Unpleasant sounds which come from the loosened and enlarged vagina during sexual intercourse may be disrupting for concentration. After vaginal tightening operation, these sounds coming from vagina disappear or get minimized.

Reconstruction of bladder and rectal prolapsus (sagging): Genital organ prolapsus cause self-confidence problems in women. In this way, it causes sexual stimulation, libido (sexual desire) and orgasm problems. Bladder and rectal prolapsus can simultaneously be reconstructed during vaginal tightening surgery.

Increase in self-confidence and orgasm: Enlargement in the vagina can make orgasm difficult. The wide structure of vagina entrance and even vaginal gaping (where inside of vagina can be seen externally) can disrupt sexual self-confidence. In the same way, male partners get more pleasure with a narrow vagina.

Frequent vaginal infections: Infection incidence increases in women who have a wide vagina and whose perineum is torn after vaginal delivery.

Who performs vagina tightening operations?

Vagina tightening operations should be performed by gynecologist surgeons who have been trained in this field. Vaginoplasty is completely a gynecological, reconstructive operation.

How is vagina tightening operation performed?

Vagina tightening operation is usually performed under sedation and local anesthesia. The operation lasts for 45 minutes – 1 hour on average.

To achieve the best result, it requires an average of 6-7 cm of progression into the vagina starting from the entrance. In this way, excess tissues are removed and the vagina is sutured with special stitches and tissues are bounded. Because tightening made until 2-3 cm interior from the entrance is not found sufficient for couples.

If there is a problem of rectocele (sagging at the last part of the bowel),this problem is also solved by performing muscle approximation (Levator sture). Does vagina enlarge again? Is operation permanent?

The most important feature of vaginal tightening surgery is to achieve a permanent tightness. So unless there is a normal birth again after the surgery, there will be no enlargement again.

What are the risks of vagina tightening operation?

When vaginal tightening surgeries are performed by experienced gynecologists, even the risks such as bleeding and infection that can be seen in every surgery are seen very little.

However, the most important problem that may be seen in the case of surgeon's lack of experience is the narrowing of the vagina more than normal and the possibility of pain occurrence during sexual intercourse. Another problem is that vaginal enlargement can continue if necessary tightening is not made in vagina tightening operations.

Can vagina tightening be applied for women who have not given birth?

Yes. The vagina may enlarge depending on the vagina’s structure in women who have not given birth. Over time, vaginal enlargement can be seen after some interventions as abortion and frequent sexual intercourse. Moreover some of the women have wide and smooth vagina structurally. These situations can lead to pleasure problems in partners.

If vaginoplasty is not performed appropriately…

It means that surgery has been unsuccessful if the vagina not sufficiently tightened during the vaginoplasty operation. Re-shrinking and tightening can be done with a second operation (revision operation) again.

If vagina tightening is made especially by raising the vagina entrance excessively, such problems as being unable to have sexual penetration or pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia) may occur. In some patients, contractions can be seen similar to vaginismus problem because of anxiety that develops after vagina tightening. These concerns can be eliminated with simple exercises.
